"There will be a time when you believe everything is finished.
This will be the beginning."

- Louis L'Amour, Author -

November is a thankful month. It is also one that is leading us to winter months of colder weather.

It will be easier and easier to say I can't go for my daily walk because it's cold or wet. It will be easier and easier to say, I need to sleep more since the mornings are so cold and the bed is so warm. It will be easier to say that working out is for warmer weather, not winter.

As humans we have a knack for making excuses. Instead we should be wrapping up in warm clothing and getting out as much as we can and enjoy the beauty in the world while at the same time doing our body good.

"No matter what our age
or condition,

there are still
untapped possibilities
within us,

and new beauty
awaiting to be born."

- Dale E. Turner, Actor -

If you can't walk outside, find an indoor place to walk. Malls are excellent places to take a stroll when the weather is bad outside. Some fitness centers, gyms, and YMCAs have indoor walking areas. Large department stores like Walmart, Kmart, Target, or one of many other options are also great places to rack up the steps if you walk the perimeter of the store.

Where there's a will, there is a way to keep walking and moving even in winter. So don't let excuses drag you down.

November is a month of thanksgiving. Always look at the things you can do instead of the things you can't. Always be willing to try new things and not make excuses. You never know if you can do something or if you will like it until you actually try it. It's a blessing to be able to try new things.

Never stop learning, when you are snowed in and can't get out, read and learn. Watch a good movie or documentary. But don't forget to move. You can still do a few exercises at home and if nothing else, just walk back and forth from one end of the house to the other.

End the month of November remembering all the wonderful blessings in your life including your physical abilities. Don't compare your abilities with someone else. You will always find someone who can do more than you can....always. Instead be thankful for your own abilities and then use them to fullest. The more you use them, the more you will have and better your will feel.

End November
by being Thankful
for All the Positive Things
That Are Happening
In Your Life!

Do you concentrate on the things you can do rather than the things you can't? Do you let yourself be discourage when you see someone who is walking faster, lifting more weight, or losing weight faster than you are? STOP! Do you find all the things you can do and then do them? Are you thankful for the abilities you have? Are you thankful for all the positive things that are happening in your life?

Encouragement: November and Thanksgiving - It's not just about the food!

November is the month of thanksgiving and one of the biggest meals we will eat all year. When I was young and both grandmothers were still living, our family had the biggest Thanksgiving meal we would eat all year. Leftovers were common. The fellowship of being with my cousins, aunts and uncles, and all our families was nice.

The sad part is once the grandmothers were gone, the big Thanksgiving gatherings were gone also. I miss those days. When I was raising my children, I tried to recreate those abundant Thanksgiving meals for my children, hoping to give them warm memories of family. Unfortunately, my family lived 1200 miles away and my in-laws were already gone. We had the big home cooked meals, but it was most of the time just the four of us and maybe a stray child or two who had no place to go for Thanksgiving. We still made warm and happy memories.

"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted
to a profoundly sick society."

- Jiddu Krishnamurti, Indian Philosopher -

Our society has been healthier in times past when it comes to families. Computers, televisions, social media, video/computer games, texting and messaging have taken the place of face-to-face gatherings or talking.

As someone over 50 who has experienced the best and the worst of it, I think we can still salvage our traditions of big thanksgiving gatherings. How? Just do it. Have the dinners and invite the family...all of them. The ones who show up, be sure they have a good time and no drama.

If you have no family, then invite friends that may also be alone. Make up your own family. If you get an invitation for a dinner at a friends house for Thanksgiving, go! Put some effort into this and you will see progress.

Don't let the typewritten word on a computer or smart phone become the only communication you have with your family and friends. Call them up, go visit them, invite them over, plan outings with them, get out of the house. Especially for occasions like Thanksgiving.
We have so much to be thankful for, let's not forget the good things in our lives and not dwell on the bad.

"In every thing give thanks:
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

- 1 Thessalonians 5:18 -

This Thanksgiving be thankful for all you have and don't dwell on the things you "think" you are missing. If you are breathing, you have something to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Do you have a big thanksgiving meal? Is it with family? Friends? Alone? Do you serve food to others that day at a shelter, soup kitchen, or to the homeless? Do you actually spend the day being thankful for the country you live in, the life you have, and the freedom to make choices? Please share any stories of past Thanksgivings that you may have had and you think could inspire and encourage us.

Book Review: Healthy at 100 - How to Increase Your Life and Health Span

"Exuberance is beauty."
- William Blake, English Poet -

"How you can - at any age - dramatically increase your life span and your health span." is the statement on the cover of this book. Let's turn that statement around and make it into a question "Can we dramatically increase our life and health span at any age?"

"Healthy at 100" gathers longevity ideas from four diversified cultures that most people have never heard of: Abkhasia, Vilcabamba, Hunza, and Okinawa. The author, John Robbins, discovered through his research these rare traits of each of the four cultures:
  1. Abkhasia - People are healthier at 90 than most Americans are in their 30s and 40s. (Located in southern Russia)
  2. Vilcabamba - Heart disease and dimentia does not exist. (Located in Equador's Andes Mountains)
  3. Hunza - Cancer, diabetes, asthma are unknown. (Located in the northern most tip of Pakistan)
  4. Okinawa -More people live to a 100 here than any place in the world. (Located in southern most Japan)

So why? Why do most people in these four cultures outlive the rest of the world with no knowledge of cancer, diabetes, dementia, heart disease, asthma, and are healthier than any other group on earth?

They all have specific traits that promote and encourage long, healthy lives. Some that are common to all four cultures are:
  1. Diet - consists mostly of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, etc. They all treat meat as a condiment and not the center of attention and fish is big, also.
  2. Physical activity - they move a lot. They walk mostly and some walk everywhere they go.
  3. Emotional - they have strong relationships with family and community.
  4. They celebrate life - virtually stress free, happy, contented, accepting of other's individuality, laugh easily.

"If you can't fly, then run.
If you can't run, then walk.

If you can't walk, then crawl. But whatever you do,
keep moving."

- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -

Although this book is full of so much more, it is to be taken with a grain of caution, in my opinion. Our world, our culture, is quite different from theirs. There are some factors in our world that don't exist in these four cultures and we must keep this in mind.

I suggest reading this book to encourage you to learn these four cultures. Also, much of it can be applied to our lives and will definitely improve your health and happiness.

The book sprinkles chapters at the end of each part called Steps You Can Take. These chapters attempt to simplify all the information you just read into usable and applicable information.

I recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their health and happiness. The audio version of this book was easier for me to digest. I actually read this book once and listened to the audio version once. I learned something from each.

Do you desire to improve your health, happiness, or extend your years? What do you already do that you think makes you healthier and happier? Please share your thoughts on healthy living.

Encouragement: Important human quality - Love!

As we get older we sometimes forget what it feels like to be in love.

We get so wrapped up in the day-to-day that we overlook one of the most important things about being human, love.

In many cases, we give up on love, on ourselves, and our dreams. God doesn't give up on us. Sometimes if we open our heart and mind to all possibilities, we find that we are only beginning to understand his plan for us.

Whether you are 50, 60, 70 or more, you will find that your life is a constant learning opportunity, filled with blessings. You just have to open your heart enough to receive them.

Open your heart,
look for the blessings,
give love and

you will receive love.

Who do you love? Have you ever been in love? What happened to that love? Are you loved? By whom are you loved? Do you have room in your life for more love? Are you willing to open your heart enough to receive more?
